New estimates by Johns Hopkins University show that more 2.5 million people in the United States so far have been infected with COVID-19.
The total population of the United States is a little over 331 million. When you do the math, the number of people reportedly infected in the U.S. comes to a little less than 0.75 (seventy-five hundredths) of 1 percent of the nation’s total population.
As for the entire planet, Earth’s total population is estimated to be 7.8 billion people. When you do the math, the number of people infected (an estimated 10 million) comes to .13 (thirteen-hundredths) of 1 percent of the total world population.
And these numbers add up to a pandemic?
Why on Earth does the number of COVID-19 cases continue to dominate the headlines, especially when the number of deaths reported daily continues to decline? Not to mention the lack of any details about the victims who died or their pre-infection health problems. Where is the context in the reporting?
Even worse is when the media substitute the raw numbers with unfounded, biased and incendiary words such as “spiking” and “surging” and “explosively.” Even if it were accurate, it’s not enough to report that the number of infections is spiking upward, surging and climbing explosively. What does that mean? What constitutes the use of any of those adjectives? Prove it with real evidence.
Moreover, what the heck is wrong with trying to achieve herd immunity as we try to stop crashing economically?
Intelligent people will do whatever it takes to avoid being infected. That’s what the numbers truly tell us. Published statistics show that 783,000 victims so far in the U.S. have recovered from COVID-19. Worldwide, recoveries number more than 5 million.
The rest of the people – the audaciously bold who want to risk being infected (such as the bar hoppers, the casino players, the beach-goers, etc.) — let them eat cake and suffer the potential consequences. Darwin’s Theory will take care of them. If they are among the survivors, hats off to them and their “show me” belief in the First Amendment.
But if the risk proves fatal to any of them, the world will be better off without them. There are two things about ignorance: (1) Stupid is as stupid does, so stupid deserves whatever results, and (2) you can’t fix stupid, because before that can happen, stupid has to want to be fixed.
Meanwhile, the right-minded will continue to isolate their elderly loved ones, especially those with underlying health conditions. And we’ll continue to (1) cough and sneeze into the crooks of our arms, (2) try to stay 6 feet away from each other, (3) turn and walk away when some nearby lunatic coughs or sneezes openly, (4) train ourselves to not touch our faces, and (5) wash our hands frequently with soap and warm water.
