During a conversation the other day, one of my sons asked me a couple of questions.
“Why,” he posed, “is the federal government handing out feebies to illegal immigrants, while so many wounded combat veterans are all but left hanging after they get what medical attention they can from Veterans Affairs?
“And why,” he continued, “do I have to pay for health insurance mandated by the federal government, but illegal immigrants get medical care for free without health insurance? On top of that, I have to pay for the free medical care they receive at local hospital emergency rooms — because those costs are passed on to me and other paying patients and by our private-sector health insurers.”
The only answer I could give my son was: “I don’t know.”
All that came to mind was something Thomas Jefferson said so many decades ago: “The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”
